Roger Federer has retained his title at the ATP 500 Basel after defeating Rafael Nadal in an entertaining three-set final.
The Swiss star had lost his five past matches against Nadal and showed up in risk of another defeat when he dropped the second set, however enjoyed a decisive break in the third to seal a 6-3 5-7 6-3 win on home soil.
The 34-year-old Swiss, world number two behind Novak Djokovic, guaranteed the 88th title of his profession. The Basel trophy was his 6th of the season as he cleaned his record to 58-9.
Federer’s triumph was his eleventh against Nadal, who has won 23 of their meetings.
Victory in two hours in front of a charged-up crowd at the St Jakobshalle gave Federer his first victory over Nadal since his 2012 triumph in the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Masters, ending a five-match winning streak by the Spaniard.
